Hokkien words and phrases are commonly used in our daily lives. But do you know that many hokkien words are misused and used irrelevantly by most people even without actually knowing the ACTUAL meaning of the words? We used them because everybody is using them! But to be frank, many dont even know that they have used it incorrectly. They might even think that you are silly when you corrected them.

Let's say the word, " Tyco " ... it is used usually when someone accomplishes something impossible.

But do you know that " tyco " actually means leprosy? It's 麻疯 ( ma feng ) in chinese. So actually you are cursing someone when they done the impossibe. XD

Perhaps, you should tried to asked some elderly who speaks Hokkien more than chinese or other languages if you dont agree with my mom who told me about it and who is a " hokkien lang " ( 福建人 ) . XD

Actually, i found a English word when I was searching through dictionary which sounds like " tyco ", it's " impetigo " [imp-it-tie-go]. It is a kind of contagious skin disease, esp. of children, usually caused by streptococcal bacteria, marked by a superficial pustular eruption, particularly on the face.

I think it's just coincidence that both leprosy and impetigo are skin diseases. XD


" Walao " is like so damn common one lah. But do you think that it is actually a mispronunciation of " wah lan ". You guys confirm know wad " lan " means, right? XD So we are actually swearing without really knowing that we are swearing. XDDDD

" Diao " is quite popular at a point of time too. It is actually used by the cantonese. I will leave out the meaning due to the fact that it is too vulgar. XD
